Equity & Capital

Dilution

By Tim Nichols

In plain English

A reduction in an owner's percentage interest or other measured economic position, often when additional equity is issued or convertible instruments convert. A lower percentage does not necessarily mean a lower dollar value. The calculation depends on the securities, option pool, financing terms, and capitalization assumptions.
