Work Made for Hire

By Tim Nichols

In plain English

A copyright category in which the employer or qualifying commissioning party is treated as the legal author. It can apply to employee work within the scope of employment and certain specially commissioned categories with the required signed agreement. Hiring and paying an independent developer does not automatically make all software work made for hire.
