Contracts

Governing Law

By Tim Nichols

In plain English

The law selected to interpret an agreement and resolve specified legal questions. A governing-law clause is different from a clause choosing the court, location, or dispute process. Mandatory laws and conflict-of-laws rules can limit how far the parties' selection controls.
