Intellectual Property

Open-Source License

By Tim Nichols

In plain English

Terms granting permissions to use, copy, modify, or distribute software made available under an open-source license. Conditions differ and may include notices, attribution, or source-disclosure obligations in particular circumstances. Open source is not the same as public domain, and using a component does not transfer its ownership to the business.
